Episode 3: Kate Wormser of Lot F Gallery
Today I'm talking to Kate Wormser, co-owner of Lot F Gallery in Boston. Kate tells us the story of how she and her husband James decided to take the plunge and open a gallery space in a pretty personal space, their actual home. Seriously, the walls of their living room are the spaces from which people buy really beautiful art. It's a pretty ingenious concept and one that naturally evolved from two college kids collecting art into a lucrative, fulfilling business.
I've known this couple for a while now, but I had no idea how they started their business, so I was thrilled when Kate agreed to chat with me for Keeping Shop. Kate is super approachable and her chill, easy going vibe is apparent in how she structures and runs the gallery. We talk about going into business with her partner (11:00), how she handled taking over the responsibility for running the gallery when James was a offered an amazing job (12:34), and the empowerment that comes from just jumping into something and getting it done (13:50). She also acknowledges the challenges that come with living in your brick and mortar (7:56) and her dream of opening another art space someday. We chat about how being open to changes to the structure of your business can benefit you and your clients (8:45), how she finds the artists to show at Lot F (15:28) and her processes for installing a new show (18:48).
The simplicity with which Kate approaches her business is something I think we can all learn from. I don't say simplicity in imply that running her business is easy, but she's confident in knowing what is and isn't going to work for Lot F and how to keep the emphasis on the art rather then getting caught up in extraneous details (21:28). She also knows exactly what she needs to relax after a long day (29:00) and how to be mindful about saying no to "guilting" herself into doing more work (30:16). Enjoy the show.
The next show at Lot F is on January 20th and all you Boston area people are going to want to check this one out. See below for more about this show and Lot F Gallery. Also, be sure to check out the links to some of the artists Kate mentions during our chat.
